Sibsagar College, established in 1947, is a distinguished institution of higher education located at Joysagar, approximately 5 km southwest of Sivasagar town, on the eastern bank of the historic Joysagar Tank that commemorates the Ahom Queen Joymati. The college was founded by the visionary educationist Padmadhar Chaliha, with his son Paragdhar Chaliha serving as the chief architect of the institution.
Initially affiliated to Gauhati University, the college has been affiliated with Dibrugarh University since 1965. Spread across 103 bighas of land, the institution was granted Autonomous status and in 2023, was upgraded to Sibsagar University under the Sibsagar University Act 2023. The college offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across Arts, Science, and Education streams, with 16 different departments.
