Founded in the pre-independence era, the college has played a pioneering role in shaping and promoting education across the entire lower Brahmaputra valley. The institution began its journey with a modest enrollment of only 28 students and has since grown into a multi-streamed co-educational institution with over 4,420 students.
Initially affiliated to Calcutta University, the college came under the academic jurisdiction of Gauhati University upon its establishment in 1948. The college received UGC recognition under Section 2(f) in 1962 and Section 12B in 1972. Spread over 16 acres of land, Nalbari College offers programmes from Higher Secondary to Postgraduate level, with 9 Humanities & Social Science departments and 7 Science departments.
