Diphu Government College was formally inaugurated on 23 June 1964, marking the beginning of higher education in the Karbi Anglong District of Assam. The college owes its existence to the pioneering efforts and visions of eminent personalities including Lt. Chatra Sing Teron, Lt. Sai Sai Terang, Lt. Jogendra Nath Goswami, Lt. Dhoniram Rongpi, Lt. Joysing Doloi, Lt. Sar Rongpi, and Lt. Padma Kanta Barua. Beginning as a venture Arts College with only seven students and five teachers, the institution was taken over by the Government of Assam in 1967. The Science stream was introduced in 1979, followed by Commerce in 1987.
The college campus is located on a hillock in the district headquarters of Diphu, Karbi Anglong. Affiliated to Assam University, Silchar, the college is the only NAAC accredited higher educational institution in Karbi Anglong District, having received NAAC B++ Grade. With over 5,000 students, 15 departments, and more than 151 faculty and staff members, Diphu Government College stands as a beacon of educational excellence in the hill districts of Assam.
