Barpeta College, also known as Barpeta Girls' College, was established on 7 September 1978 with a noble vision of spreading higher education among the women folk of Barpeta district. It is the only women's higher educational institution in the district, founded by eminent personalities led by Late Nibaran Chandra Choudhury who dedicated themselves to keeping the institution alive through various challenges.
The college is located in the historically famous "Satra Nagari" Barpeta, on a 7-acre campus known locally as "Hati reserve." The institution attained Deficit-Grant-in-Aid status on 25 March 1998 and was registered under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 on 1 January 2007. Affiliated to Gauhati University, the college has been assessed and accredited twice by NAAC peer teams, receiving Grade 'C' in the first cycle and Grade 'B' in the second cycle.
