Assam's oldest and most prestigious legal institution, established in 1914, shaping the legal fraternity of Northeast India for over a century with excellence in legal education and advocacy.
BRM Government Law College, established in 1914, is the oldest law school in Northeast India and one of the earliest legal institutions in the country. Originally founded as Earle Law College, named after Sir Archdale Earle, the then Chief Commissioner of Assam, the college was established following a resolution passed at the Education Conference held on September 12, 1912, at Lord Curzon Hall. The institution was the culmination of public sentiment and the vision of eminent Assamese leaders including Manik Chandra Baruah, Nabin Chandra Bordoloi, and Tarun Ram Phukan.
Initially affiliated to Calcutta University from 1914 to 1947, the college came under the jurisdiction of Gauhati University in 1948. It was later renamed in honor of Bishnuram Medhi, a distinguished freedom fighter and politician. The college's first principal was the renowned writer and scholar Jnanadabhiram Barua. Today, the institution continues to uphold its legacy of producing outstanding legal professionals for the region and beyond.
